Help with divorce and separation
Emerging from the emotional minefield
Divorce and separation can be devastating. I help couples negotiate a route through what can frequently be a very bleak time.
It’s an emotional minefield. You might be overwhelmed by feelings of abandonment, betrayal, bitterness, loss, shame, guilt and despair. But together, with the enhanced communication skills and help with emotional regulation that couples CBT offers, we can work towards acceptance and find ways of moving forward.
Particular issues that separating couples frequently want help with include:
- Parenting and custody, including
- How to tell the children
- Clear logistical plans for childcare (when with mum/dad)
- Extended family dynamics
- Dealing with friends, work and social situations
- Coming to terms with separation when one partner is reluctant
- Overcoming the loss of the relationship
How I can help you
I was originally trained in systemic and psychodynamic relationship theories with Relate and then went on to develop my career as a CBT couples therapist. Please see the About Carla page for more of my credentials.
I’m also a Resolution family law therapist, which means that I’m committed to helping you find a productive way forward. Resolution is an organisation of 6,500 family lawyers and other professionals in England and Wales who believe in a non-confrontational approach to family law matters. All Resolution practitioners follow a code of practice, the cornerstone of our work. This promotes a sensitive, constructive and cost-effective way of dealing with divorce and separation. It also means that couples are much more likely to arrive quickly at a mutually acceptable agreement.
Some clients, who don’t speak English as their first language, find that confident communication is a challenge. In those cases, it’s possible to work through an interpreter.
